The Black Widows on Identity Theft
KATIE: The Black Widows would like to give everyone a few tips on how to avoid Identity Theft.
JANE: Identity Theft? I'm not sure I follow...
KATIE: You know, Janie, when someone steals your identity to open up credit cards or uses your credit cards to commit fraud.
JANE: Is that what it's called? My friend had that happen to her. She started getting calls from a collection agency on an account she never opened...
MARGO: Why can't they have something more productive like "Weight Theft?" I'd volunteer for that.
KATIE (glances at Alexandria): Some of us don't have much to spare, Margo...
MARGO: (glances at Alexandria): Not my damn fault she's filled with cyberspace instead of meat and bones.
ALEXANDRIA: You know I can hear the two of you...
MARGO: Good. I just want to say that if Hallie Berry wants to steal my identity, she can damn well go ahead.
KATIE: Not likely, Margo, but here's a few tips for everyone else...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PREVENT IDENTITY THEFT
- Check your bank and credit card accounts frequently. Almost every account has on-line access. Visit them often and report any discrepancies immediately to the company. They can put an immediate freeze on your account to prevent any further usage.
- Check your credit report. You're entitled to one FREE report from each of the three major credit reporting companies once a year. You can view these at: AnnualCreditReport.com By staggering your request and only asking for one report at a time from each company, you can view your report every four months.
- Check your child's credit report. Thousands of children's identities are stolen every year and used to open up accounts. Check their reports as well. Remember that if you find any discrepancies, the credit reporting company is obligated to investigate it.
- Shred, shred, shred. Though Identity Theft is the number one cyber crime, it is still largely perpetuated by "old fashioned" means like stealing mail and trash in order to get access to account information. Shred all of those credit card offers, billing statements and medical records. Buy a decent cross-cut shredder that can handle not only paper, but credit cards and CDs.
- Use the Post Office blue drop-off box. If you put mail out in a mailbox with the flag up, it is a signal to every thief that there may be potential information worth stealing - a bill with account information, a check which can be washed and reused. Place your outgoing mail in the secure "official" US Post Office blue drop-off points.
